Lectio Divina – 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Jan. 27th) – Cycle C

PURPOSE OF THIS SCRIPTURE READING – Develop a personal relationship with Jesus through the Word of God with the understanding that the Holy Spirit will teach and remind us of all Jesus said and did. Psalm 32:8 tells us, “I will instruct you and show you the way you should walk, give you counsel and watch over you.”

  1. Say the opening prayer
  2. Read the passage slowly three times as though Jesus were talking to you.
  3. Converse with Jesus, asking questions and listening to Him.

OPEN WITH THE FOLLOWING PRAYER:

Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21 – Since many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as those who were eyewitnesses from the beginning and ministers of the word have handed them down to me, I too have decided, after investigating everything accurately anew, to write it down in an orderly sequence for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received.

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of Him spread throughout the whole region. He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all. He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to His custom into the synagogue on the Sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. Rolling up the scroll, He handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”

SEXTO DIA                                                 LEE TODO EL COMENTARIO

                                                                                           ISAIAS 62:1-5

                 En la lectura de hoy vemos a Isaías orando fervorosamente no solo por Jerusalén sino por todo el pueblo de Dios. El ora por el tiempo de liberación futura, cuando todo el pueblo vivirá con Dios en una paz perfecta. Dios no sólo nos ofrece esperanza en el futuro, sino que se nos hace presente también para ayudarnos en nuestras necesidades del presente. El entusiasmo de Isaías por su pueblo y su deseo de ver terminados los trabajos de salvación lo hacían orar sin cesar, esperando que Israel fuera salvado.

Isaías pide para que el nombre de Jerusalén traiga sobre sí misma la protección de Dios y sea llamada una ciudad en la que el Señor se deleita. Y ora para que nunca mas tenga que pasar tantos sufrimiento su pueblo.

Hariamos bien ahora si tuvieramos ese entusiasmo de Isaías de ver hecha la voluntad de Dios. Se nos dice en las Escrituras que no nos preocupemos por nada; que en cambio oremos por todo. Díle a Dios tus necesidades y no te olvides de darle las gracias por todas Sus respuestas (Filipenses 4:6). Isaías nos ha mostrado que si confiamos en Dios por medio de la oración El nos escuchará y nos contestará.

San Pablo nos dice que cambiemos nuestras esperanzas y aú nuestras preocupaciones en oraciones. ¿Quieres preocuparte menos y estar en paz? Entonces ora con más frecuencia. Siempre que empieces a preocuparte, detente y haz oración. Isaías halló la paz de Dios, no con pensamientos positivos, sino sabiendo que Dios estaba en control y que sus oraciones de alabanza serían escuchadas claramente por Dios. Podemos orar igual que Isaías y hallar la paz también.

 

1 CORINTIOS 12:4-11

Los dones espirituales son habilidades especiales que el Espíritu Santo da a cada persona. Esos dones pueden ser diversos pero constantemente nos orientan a la unidad. Nos permiten ayudar en las necesidades de los creyentes. Hay muchos dones espirituales y ninguno es superior al otro. Todos los dones espirituales vienen del Espíritu Santo y su intenciín es edificar el cuerpo de Cristo, la iglesia.

Pablo estaba preocupado por las fricciones que había en la iglesia de Corintio por que en vez de edificar y unificar la iglesia, los dones espirituales los estaban separando. El don espiritual es dado para el beneficio de la comunidad y no para el del individuo. Todos los Cristianos tienen fe, sin embargo algunos tienen el don espiritual de fe el cual dá en gran medida plena confianza en el poder del Espíritu Santo. Pablo nos alienta a recordar que cualquiera que sea el don espiritual que se nos haya dado debemos usarlo para mejorar a la comunidad. El poder del Espíritu Santo está sobre todos nosotros y a todos se nos ha dado un don espiritual.

Los dones se manifiestan en nuestra vida al recibir diariamente la gracia de Dios por medio de nuestra vida de oración, la lectura de las escrituras, los sacramentos y la convivencia con otros creyentes.

San Pedro nos dice que todos tenemos algunas habilidades; busca las tuyas y úsalas. Todas nuestras habilidades deben dedicarse a servir a los otros. Ninguna es para nuestro deleite personal.

 

JUAN 2:1-12

El evangelio de hoy nos muestra que cualquier cosa que Jesús tocaba era cambiada. Cambió el agua en vino, cambió a los pecadores en santos. Las bodas en los tiempos de Jesús fueron celebraciones que duraban siete días. Los banquetes eran preparados por varios de los invitados y toda la semana se iba en celebrar la nueva vida de la pareja recién casada. Muchas veces todo el pueblo estaba invitado y casi todos asistían. Era muy penoso que se acabara el vino y era como romper las reglas de hospitalidad (no escritas), del lugar.

Jesús fue llamado por Su madre para proteger el honor de una buena familia del lugar. Jesús estaba en su misión de salvar al mundo, y aún así tomó tiempo para asistir a la boda y tomar parte en las festividades. Jesús supo que el tomar parte en la vida de las personas era una gran parte de Su misión hacía el Calvario. El valoraba las festividades de la boda por que estas involucraban a la gente y El vino para estar con la gente. María no entendió la respuesta de Jesús pero como confiaba absolutamente en El, supo que El haría lo que fuera necesario.

Nuestro llamado a servir o nuestra misión de traer la palabra de Dios a otros puede conseguirse en tiempo de celebración con los demás. Debemos traer un equilibrio a nuestras vidas y lo haremos trayendo a Jesús en los tiempos placenteros al igual que en el de trabajo. Hoy los que creemos en Jesús, pero nos encontramos con situaciones que no podemos entender, debemos continuar confiando en que El hará lo que sea mejor.

 

Aplicación

La primera lectura de esta semana nos dice que Dios nos dá, no solo un nombre nuevo sino también una vida nueva. La segunda lectura explica como cada don individual dado por el Espíritu Santo es para el beneficio de la comunidad. El Evangelio muestra que lo que Jesús toca, El lo cambia…ya sea agua o corazones.

Esta semana, permite que tus dones del Espíritu Santo se manifiesten en la comunidad. Has oración con tu familia o con tus compañeros de escuela o de trabajo. Permite que tus dones sean edificantes para los que te rodean. El don de aliviar puede ser un simple abrazo o el hacerle la comida a alguien. El don de enseñar o predicar puede ser leerle las escrituras a alguien que no puede leer o enseñar una clase de escrituras a la comunidad. El don de la hospitalidad puede ser llevar en tu carro a alguien a la iglesia o a la tienda. Los dones son muchos, pero todos ellos vienen de un mismo espíritu. El Espíritu Santo vive en tu templo. (1 Cor. 6:19)

SIXTH DAY          READ ALL OF THE COMMENTARY

                         ISAIAH 62:1-5

     In today’s reading we see Isaiah in earnest prayer for not only Jerusalem, but for all of God’s people.   He prays for the time of future deliverance, when all people will live with God in perfect peace. God offers us not only hope in the future, but help in our present needs. Isaiah’s zeal for his country and his desire to see the works of salvation completed caused him to pray without ceasing, hoping that Israel would be saved.

     Isaiah prays that the name of Jerusalem will bring upon itself the full protection of God and will be called a city in which God takes delight. He prays that never again shall his people have to go through such suffering.

     We would do well today to have some of Isaiah’s zeal to see God’s will done. We are told in scripture not to worry about anything; instead pray about everything. Tell God your needs and do not forget to thank him for his answers (Philippians 4:6). Isaiah has shown us that when we put our trust in God through prayer, he listens and answers.

     St. Paul tells us to turn our hopes and even our worries into prayers. Do you want to worry less and to be at peace? Then pray more. Whenever you start to worry, stop and pray. Isaiah found God’s peace, not in positive thinking, but in knowing that God was in control and that prayers of praise would be heard very clearly by God. We can pray just like Isaiah, and find peace, too.

 

                     1 CORINTHIANS 12:4-11

     Spiritual gifts are special abilities given to each person by the Holy Spirit. These gifts may bring diversity, but they constantly orient us to unity. They enable us to minister to the needs of the believers. There are many spiritual gifts and one gift is not superior to another. All of the spiritual gifts come from the Holy Spirit and their purpose is to build up Christ’s body, the church.

     Paul was concerned about the friction going on in the Corinthian church because, instead of building and unifying the church, spiritual gifts were splitting it. The spiritual gift is given for the benefit of the community and not for the individual. All Christians have faith; some, however, have the spiritual gift of faith which is an unusual measure of trust in the Holy Spirit’s power. Paul encourages us to remember that whatever spiritual gift we have been given, it is to be used to uplift the community. The power of the Holy Spirit is upon all of us, and we all have been given a spiritual gift.

     The gifts are manifested in our life as we daily receive the grace from God through our prayer life, reading of scripture, sacraments, and fellowship with other believers. St. Peter tells us everyone has some abilities; find yours and use them. All of our abilities should be dedicated to others. None are for our own exclusive enjoyment.

 

                          JOHN 2:1-12

     Today’s Gospel shows us that whatever Jesus touched was changed. He changed the water into wine, and he changed sinners into saints. The weddings in Jesus’ day were celebrations that lasted for a full seven days. Banquets were prepared for many guests, and the week was spent celebrating the new life of the married couple. Many times the whole village was invited, and because it was an insult to refuse an invitation, most people came. To run out of wine was an embarrassment and broke the strong unwritten laws of hospitality of the area.

     Jesus was called upon by his mother to protect the honor of a good local family. Jesus was on a mission to save the world, and yet he took time to attend a wedding and take part in its festivities. Jesus knew that being part of people’s lives was very much a part of his mission to Calvary. He valued these wedding festivities because they involved people, and he came to be with the people. Mary did not understand Jesus’ reply, but she trusted in him completely and knew he would do what was needed.

     Our call to ministry or our mission to bring God’s word to others can often be accomplished in joyous times of celebration with others. We need to bring balance into our lives and we do that by bringing Jesus into times of pleasure as well as times of work. Today we who believe in Jesus, but run into situations we cannot understand, must continue to trust that he will work in the best way.

 

Application

     This week’s first reading tells us that God gives us, not only a new name, but also a new life. The second reading explains how each individual gift of the Holy Spirit is for the benefit of the community. The Gospel shows what Jesus touches, he changes…be it water or hearts.

     This week, let your gifts of the Holy Spirit be manifested in the community. Pray with your family, school or work associates. Let your gifts uplift those around you. A gift of healing can be a simple hug or making someone a meal. A gift of teaching or preaching may be reading scripture to someone who can not read or it may be teaching a scripture class to the community. The gift of hospitality might be driving someone to church or to the store. The gifts are many, but they come from the one Spirit. The Holy Spirit resides in your temple (1 Corinthians 6:19).

John 2:1-11 – There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and His disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever He tells you.” Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water. “ So they filled them to the brim. Then He told them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from—although the servers who had drawn the water knew–, the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now.” Jesus did this as the beginning of His signs at Cana in Galilee and so revealed His glory, and His disciples began to believe in Him.

SEXTO DIA                                            LEE TODO EL COMENTARIO

ISAIAS 42:1-4, 6-7

                La lectura de esta semana viene de una sección que a veces se denomina Segunda Parte de Isaías (Capítulos 40-55) generalmente se considera que fueron escritos por poetas desconocidos quienes profetizaron cerca del final del exilio de Babilonia. En 520 A.C. la ciudad de Jerusalén cayó, las murallas y palacios fueron destruidos y el templo sagrado fue quemado. El rey Sedecias y el resto de la población fueron llevados a Babilonia en cadenas.

De estos capítulos vienen los grandes oráculos mesiánicos conocidos como Los Cantos del Servidor. En cada canto se da un punto de vista diferente acerca del misterioso “servidor.” El destino de sufrir y de glorificación se cumple en la pasión y glorificación de Jesucristo.

Isaías invoca a alguien que representa a Israel y sin embargo todavía habla a Israel. El “servidor” es a la vez un individuo y una nación como individuo colectivo. Habla acerca de las cualidades del pasado y hace de su “servidor” una figura clave del futuro. Isaías hace notar que el papel del servidor no se limita sólo a Israel, sino que será universal. Vio a su gente encadenada y exiliada a Babilonia la cual estaba a mil millas de Judea. La necesidad de un mesías era de gran importancia y la esperanza de ser restaurados a su patria perdida estaba en peligro de ser completamente destruída. El “servidor” es descrito como diferente a los otros líderes, no dependiente del poder militar o de tratados con otras naciones. El no será un rey o guerrero victorioso ni estará como otros profetas gritando sus advertencias. Lo que el servidor será, hablará más fuerte que sus palabras. El servidor tendrá el poder que le dará el mismo “Espíritu” que se precipitó sobre David cuando Samuel lo unigió como rey (1 Samuel 16:13). Isaías exhorta al pueblo a ver en el servidor al escogido de Dios.

 

HECHOS 10:34-38

                En este pasaje Pedro está predicando a la muchedumbre que Dios es completamente imparcial. Vemos esta verdad reafirmada constantemente en el Antiguo Testamento. El Señor no tiene favoritismos y no teme ni a los famosos ni a los poderosos (Levítico 19:15 y Sabiduría 6:7). Dios no hace esas cosas. Pedro exhorta a sus oyentes a temer al Señor, a actuar honradamente, reverenciarlo, venerarlo y seguir sus mandamientos. Se nos ha dicho que el temor al Señor está en odiar el mal (Prov. 8:13).

Pedro les dice que Dios ha mandado un Mesías para toda la gente de Israel, por medio del cual El bautiza a las personas en el poder del Espíritu Santo. Predicó que Jesús es el Señor de todos. Fue un mensaje que todavía hoy, es presentado a un mundo que espera hambriento. Las Buenas Nuevas empezaron cuando Juan estaba bautizando a la gente en nombre del arrepentimiento. Jesús fue bautizado por Dios en el poder del Espíritu Santo.

Nosotros hemos sido ungidos como Jesús con el mismo poder y Espíritu. Jesús fue haciendo buenas obras y curando a los enfermos. El mensaje de Pedro está vivo hoy en día en cuanto vemos en los periódicos y la televisión como los sobornos, el miedo al poderoso y el favoritismo pueden causar mucha destrucción en nuestra sociedad. Estamos llamados a ir con el poder de ese mismo Espíritu, hacer buenas obras y curar a los enfermos en el nombre de Jesús (Hechos 1:8). Jesús quiere que continuemos por medio de la palabra y los sacramentos (Bautismo y Confirmación), y que seamos testigos en el mundo de que El está vivo, aquí y ahora.

 

     LUCAS 3:15-16, 21-22

                 En el evangelio de hoy vemos aparecer en escena a un profeta y a la gente ponerse muy agitada. Se sabía muy bien que en Israel no había habido un profeta por muchos años y se creía en todas partes que cuando fuera a llegar el Mesías, las profesías reaparecerían (Joel 3:1-2).

Juan se veía y hablaba como los viejos profetas. Su mensaje era directo y fuerte. Le dijo a la gente que compartiera lo que tenía con los necesitados y que cualquiera que fuera su trabajo lo hicieran lo mejor posible. Juan no tenía tiempo de confortar a aquellos que vivían descuidadamente o que tenían vidas egoistas. El llamaba a la gente a vivir correctamente. Les dijo que se deshicieran de sus pecados para evitar el castigo y que se volvieran hacia Dios para Sus bendiciones. Este es un mensaje para todos los tiempos y todos los lugares. Juan habló con urgencia por que estaba preparando a la gente para la venida del Mesías.

El bautizo de Juan con agua simbolizaba la limpieza de los pecados. El bautizmo de  Jesús con fuego (Espíritu Santo) incluía el poder que se necesitaba para hacer la voluntad de Dios. La  iglesia recibió el bautizmo de fuego en Pentecostés cuando el Espíritu Santo en forma de lenguas de fuego descendió sobre los creyentes. Entonces les fue dado el poder de proclamar la resurrección de Jesús en muchas lenguas. El bautizmo de fuego tambien simboliza el poder del Espíritu Santo de traer el juicio de Dios a los que se rehusan a arrepentirse.

Jesús en un verdadero sentido de humildad escogió ser bautizado no en Jerusalén en una gran ceremonia, El escogió hacerlo con la gente sencilla que estaba arrepintiéndose. Al estar Jesús orando Dios le habló y le confirmó Su decisión de ir adelante con Su ministerio. Dios estaba entrando en la historia humana a traves de Jesucristo. La misión de Jesús en esta tierra era identificarse con nuestra condición humana y pecadora. El empezó Su viaje al Calvario por nosotros ese día tan especial.

 

Aplicación

La primera lectura revela que ser el Mesías es ser el “servidor.” La segunda revela que Dios no tiene favoritos. En el Evangelio Dios nos habla, aún hoy día, con Su voz desde el cielo, “Este es mi Hijo muy amado, escúchenlo.”

Esta semana sé un servidor para tu familia, para un amigo o para alguien de la comunidad que esté enfermo. Dáte un tiempo, sé específico, consistente y estate listo para ver la alegría de Cristo en sus ojos mientras tú vives en lo que tú crees. Permite que la alegría del Padre se refleje en el modo en que tú amas a otros. “Tú eres Su hijo muy amado, y El está muy contento contigo.”

SIXTH DAY          READ ALL OF THE COMMENTARY

                       ISAIAH 42:1-4, 6-7

     This week’s reading from Isaiah comes from a section sometimes called Second Isaiah (Chapters 40-55) and is generally considered to have been written by an unknown poet who prophesied near the end of the Babylonian exile.  In 520 B.C. the city of Jerusalem fell, the walls and palaces were destroyed and the sacred temple burned. King Zedikiah and the rest of the population were marched to Babylon in chains.

     From these chapters come the great messianic oracles known as the Song of the Servant. In each song a different viewpoint of the mysterious “servant” is given. The destiny of suffering and glorification is fulfilled in the passion and glorification of Jesus Christ.

     Isaiah is calling upon a figure, who represents Israel, and yet still addressed as “her.”  The “servant” is both a single individual and a nation as a collective individual. He talks about the qualities of the past, and he makes his “servant” very much a key figure of the future.

     Isaiah points out that the servant’s role is not limited to Israel, but would become universal. He saw his people in chains and exiled to Babylonia, which was one thousand miles away from Judah. The need for a messiah was of great importance, and the hope of being restored to their lost homeland was in great danger of being completely demolished. The “servant” is being described as different from other leaders, not relying on military might or upon treaties with other nations. He will not be a victorious warrior or king, nor like other prophets shouting out their warnings. What the servant is will speak much louder than his words. The servant will be empowered by the same “Spirit” that rushed upon David when he was anointed king by Samuel (1 Samuel 16:13). Isaiah exhorts the people to look to the servant as God’s chosen one.

 

                         ACTS 10:34-38

     In this passage, Peter is preaching to the crowd that God shows absolutely no partiality.   We see this truth being reaffirmed constantly in the Old Testament.  The Lord shows no partiality, nor does he fear the famous or powerful (Lev. 19:15 and Wis. 6:7).  God will have no part of activity like that.  Peter challenges his listeners to fear the Lord and act upright, which means to be in reverence and awe of the Lord and to follow his commandments.  We are told that fear of the Lord is to hate evil (Proverb 8:13).

     Peter tells the crowd that God has sent to all the people of Israel a Messiah, in Whom he baptizes people in the power of the Holy Spirit.  He preached that Jesus is Lord of all,  a message that still is being presented today to a waiting,  hungry world. The Good News began when John baptized people in the name of repentance.  Jesus was baptized by God in the power of the Holy Spirit.

     We have been anointed with the same power and Spirit as Jesus.  Jesus went forth doing good works and healing the sick. Peter’s message is very much alive today as we see in our newspapers and television how bribes, fear of the powerful, and partiality to favored people can be very destructive to our society. We are called to go forth in the power of the same Spirit and do good works and heal the sick in the name of Jesus (Acts 1:8). Jesus wants us to carry on through word and sacrament (Baptism and Confirmation), and to be witnesses to the world that he is alive here and now.

 

                      LUKE 3:15-16, 21-22

     In today’s Gospel we see a prophet bursting upon the scene, and the people becoming highly agitated.  It was well known that there had not been a prophet in Israel for many years, and it was widely believed that when the Messiah would come, prophecy would reappear (Joel 3:1-2).

     John looked and spoke like the prophets of old. His message was direct and hard. He told the people to share what they had with those who needed it, and whatever your job is, do it the best way you can.  John had no time to comfort those who lived careless or selfish lives. He was calling the people to right living. He told them to turn from their sins to avoid punishment and then turn to God for his blessing. This is a message for all times and all places. John spoke with urgency because he was preparing the people for the coming Messiah.

     John’s baptism with water symbolized the washing away of sins. Jesus’ baptism by fire (Holy Spirit) includes the power needed to do God’s will. The church received baptism of fire on Pentecost when the Holy Spirit in the form of tongues of fire came upon the believers.  They were then empowered to proclaim Jesus’ resurrection in many languages. The baptism of fire also symbolizes the power of the Holy Spirit in bringing God’s judgment on those who refuse to repent.

     Jesus in the true sense of humility chose not to be baptized in a big service in Jerusalem. He chose to be with simple people who were repenting. As Jesus prayed, God spoke to him and confirmed his decision to go forth in his ministry. God was breaking into human history through Jesus Christ. Jesus’ mission on earth was to identify with our humanity and sin. He began his journey to Calvary for us on that very special day.

 

Application

     The first reading reveals to us that the Messiah is to be a “servant.”  The second reading reveals that God has no favorites. In the Gospel, God speaks to us, even today, with his voice from heaven, “This is my beloved Son, listen to him.”

     This week be a servant to your family, a friend, or to someone in the community who is sick.  Be available, be specific, be consistent, and be ready to see the joy of Christ in their eyes as you live what you believe. Let the joy of the Father be reflected in the way you love others.  “You are his beloved child, and he is well pleased with you.”                                    

 

Lectio Divina – The Baptism of the Lord (Jan. 13th) – Cycle C

PURPOSE OF THIS SCRIPTURE READING – Develop a personal relationship with Jesus through the Word of God with the understanding that the Holy Spirit will teach and remind us of all Jesus said and did. Psalm 32:8 tells us, “I will instruct you and show you the way you should walk, give you counsel and watch over you.”

  3. Converse with Jesus, asking questions and listening to Him.

SEXTO DIA                                                   LEE TODO EL COMENTARIO

ISAIAS 60:1-6

La lectura de ésta semana de Isaias viene de una sección que a veces se ha llamado Tercer Isaias (Capitulos 56-66) y en general ha sido considerado como escrito por un poeta anónimo. La época aproximada de este pasaje es alrededor del año 535 A.C. y el poeta, un discipulo de Isaias profetizó el papel que tendria el templo y la oferta de que abriria sus puertas a todas las naciones. La invitacion fue dada a todo el mundo para unirse a los rangos de Israel como el pueblo escogido del Señor.

Isaías llama a la gente a que se levante con el esplendor y el brillo del Señor (versículo 1). Les dice que la gloria del Señor brilla en ellos y a través de ellos (versículo 3). Los exhorta a tener confianza en ese amor y así serán los líderes de las naciones y muchos de otras naciones serán atraidos hacia ellos (versículos 4-5).

Hoy en día estamos llamados a levantarnos y a ser símbolos de luz y esperanza. Estamos llamados a ser luz para un mundo que está cubierto de mucha obscuridad. Podemos serlo unicamente si nosotros mismos caminamos  en la luz de Cristo. Cada uno de nosotros está llamado por el Salmista (Salmo 119:105) a ser una luz en el camino de otro. Hoy, como en el tiempo de Isaías, estamos llamados a hacer brillar la luz de la gloria de Dios a través de nosotros mismos.

 

EFESIOS 3:2-3, 5-6

Pablo escribió esta carta cuando estaba en prisión esperando ser enjuiciado ante Nerón. El reflexiona acerca de su misión para los gentiles (aquéllos que no creen en la fe Judía), y habla de su propia conversión como algo que es un gran misterio de Cristo.

Pablo estaba viajando a Damasco con el objeto de perseguir a los discípulos del Señor cuando repentinamente una luz que parecía venir del cielo resplandeció a su alrededor. El Señor lo desafió a dejar de perseguirlo y en vez de eso seguirlo. Pablo lo hizo y su vida entera cambió. El usa esta experiencia de haberse convertido para atraer a otros al cambio (Hechos 9:3-9). El reclama su lugar como un apóstol porque fue un testigo ocular del Señor durante esa “metanoia” o experiencia de conversión.

Pablo llegó a un conocimiento más profundo del plan de salvación de Dios a través de Cristo. El nos revela en esta carta que el gran secreto de Dios ha llegado a su vida. Ese secreto era que el amor, la misericordia y la gracia de Dios no eran únicamente para los Judíos sino para todos los humanos. Cuando Pablo encontró a Cristo en el camino a Damasco hubo un brillo repentino de revelación que afectó su vida entera. Esa “metanoia” está abierta a todos nosotros y estamos llamados a llevar al mundo ese mensaje. Fue para los gentiles que Dios mandó a Pablo con el objeto de abrirles los ojos y que puedan pasar de la obscuridad a la luz. Oimos a Pablo declarando audazmente que el amor de Dios y su misericordia se da a todos, Judíos y Gentiles por igual.

 

MATEO 2:1-12

Celebramos la fiesta de Epifanía que significa la visita de los astrólogos o como frecuentemente son llamados, los magos, y de la manifestación de la gloria de Cristo hacia ellos. Fue en Belén, pequeño pueblo, a seis millas de Jerusalén donde nació Jesús.

El nombre Belén significa “casa de pan,” y el pesebre donde Jesús durmió se usaba para alimentar a los animales. Es de un gran significado que Jesús nació en un lugar llamado “casa de pan,” ya que El escogió alimentarnos con Su Palabra y en Su Presencia en la Eucaristia. Se llama a Si mismo “Pan de Vida,” en Juan 6:35-66, y nosotros compartimos Su pan viviente en nuestras liturgias de acuerdo con las Escrituras (Lucas 22:14-20),en las iglesias en todo el mundo.

Belén fue donde Jacob enterró a Raquel (Génesis 48:7) y fue también ahí donde Rut se casó con Booz (Rut 4:13). Esta ciudad fue la casa de David (1 Sam. 16:1, 17:12, 20:6) y fue en Belén donde los Judíos esperaban que el ungido de Dios vendría al mundo. (Miqueas 5:1-2). Cuando Jesús nació vinieron a Belén los magos del Este para rendirle homenaje. Los magos eran hombres sabios y santos y hábíles en filosofía, medicina, ciencias naturales, adivinación e interpretación de sueños. Algunos se hicieron posteriormente miembros de una tribu pagana en Persia y sus funciones eran casi exactamente iguales a las de los sacerdotes Levitas en Israel.

Por la misma época en que Jesús nació el poeta Romano Virgilio, alababa a través de sus escritos y poemas al “salvador del mundo”, el emperador Cesar Augusto de Roma. Así que Jesús vino a un mundo que esperaba y los astrólogos de tierras lejanas se reunieron ante su cuna. Esta fue la primera señal y el símbolo de la conquista del mundo por Jesucrito.

Hoy día muchos de los hombres y mujeres eruditos vienen a alabar al Rey de Reyes, Jesús; pero muchos no lo hacen. ¿Y tú? ¿Es Jesús tu rey?, ¿le traes tu presencia como regalo? Reflexionemos en el regalo que se nos da a todos los que creemos en Cristo, el Niño de Belén. El regalo es ser coherederos de Su Reino, miembros del mismo cuerpo y participantes de la promesa. ¿Hemos hecho a alguien sentirse como un extraño indeseable? ¿Nos hemos atrevido a marcar a alguien como a un forastero, extranjero o pagano? ¿Les hemos dado la bienvenida a todos a nuestro “pesebre”? La luz de nuestros corazones ¿atrae a otros hacia El como hizo la estrella de Belen? La manifestación del brillo de la estrella habló a los Magos de la entrada del Rey al mundo. La gloria del amor de Dios para todos deberá ser manifiesta en nosotros a través del poder del Espíritu Santo y en el nombre salvador de Jesucristo.

 

 

Aplicación

Isaías nos exhorta a mirar la gloria de Dios revelada ante nosotros y llama a la gente a librarse de las cadenas del cautiverio. En Efesios, Pablo describe el plan secreto de Dios y en Mateo vemos a los sabios extremadamente felices por haber seguido a la estrella.

Esta semana, como los sabios o Magos, traigamos nuestro regalo a Jesús. El tuyo puede ser un regalo de alegría o amor, paz o paciencia, etc. Luego necesitas compartir ese regalo con alguien en tu familia o en tu lugar de trabajo. Los sabios vinieron humildemente y se fueron llenos de aliento y de esperanza. No podemos esperar que a nosotros nos pase menos que eso cuando traigamos nuestro regalo a Jesús.

PURPOSE OF THIS SCRIPTURE READING – Develop a personal relationship with Jesus through the Word of God with the understanding that the Holy Spirit will teach and remind us of all Jesus said and did. Psalm 32:8 tells us, “I will instruct you and show you the way you should walk, give you counsel and watch over you.”

Father, I can’t understand Your Word without Your grace, I acknowledge my weakness so Your power can reach perfection in me. Send Your Holy Spirit to remind, teach, and guide me to the Truth. May I share as soon as possible whatever You teach me. AMEN

Matthew 2:1-12 – When Jesus was born in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel.” Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the stars appearance. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage.” After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage.
